Variation in the stellar mass function along stellar streams

چکیده
Stellar streams are the inevitable end product of star cluster evolution, with properties a given stream being related to its progenitor. We consider how dynamical history progenitor cluster, as traced by evolution stellar mass function, is reflected in resultant stream. generate model evolving clusters range initial half-mass relaxation times and dissolution via direct N-body simulations. that dissolve quickly show no variation function along Variation is, however, observed after several times. The at edges approximately primordial it populated first stars escape before segregation occurs. Moving inwards steepens intermediate parts consist mostly low-mass escaped some has occurred. centre then marked flatter region dominated high-mass segregated cluster's were last become unbound. further find maximum slope rate which decreases distance from dissolved serve proxies for state reached dissolution; this may be able applied near-future observations.

The Stellar Mass Function
Since the major review by Scalo (1986), significant progress has been achieved in constraining the mass function (MF) of low-mass stars. The break-throughs which today allow a much better understanding of the stellar luminosity function (LF) and the underlying MF are documented here and the resulting MF for Galactic field stars is confronted with microlensing data, the chemical enrichment histo...
متن کاملThe Stellar Initial Mass Function
The current status of both the observational evidence and the theory of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is reviewed, with particular attention to the two basic, apparently universal features shown by all observations of nearby stellar systems: (1) a characteristic stellar mass of the order of one solar mass, and (2) a power-law decline of the IMF at large masses similar to the original ...

متن کاملUnderstanding the Stellar Initial Mass Function
The essential features of the stellar Initial Mass Function are, rather generally, (1) a peak at mass of a few tenths of a solar mass, and (2) a power-law tail toward higher masses that is similar to the original Salpeter function. Recent work suggests that the IMF peak reflects a preferred scale of fragmentation associated with the transition from a cooling phase of collapse at low densities t...
متن کاملMicrolensing and the Stellar Mass Function
Traditional approaches to measuring the stellar mass function (MF) are fundamentally limited because objects are detected based on their luminosity, not their mass. These methods are thereby restricted to luminous and relatively nearby stellar populations. Gravitational microlensing promises to revolutionize our understanding of the MF. It is already technologically feasible to measure the MFs ...
